Today's students are required to use computers for word-processing, spreadsheets, and graphics in the classroom. They routinely utilize the Internet to obtain written information and numerical data. A Geographic Information System (GIS) is an additional computing tool that many people currently use without knowing they are using it - for example, when they search for an address in Yahoo or use a mapping program such as Mapquest on the Internet. GIS is a potentially powerful tool that can be used to stimulate interactive learning. Most teachers are not familiar with using GIS as an interactive teaching aid, not even those who teach in our strongest school systems. We believe that orienting teachers towards using GIS technology effectively can profoundly improve interactive learning across the curriculum. We also believe that GIS technology can be used in all schools, regardless of the level of student preparation. Vertices is committed to providing GIS technology to develop and test new applications that can enhance academic activities.
